TRAVELING ON A BUDGET
Budget Travel Hacks
If you’ve been wanting to travel abroad, but have been worried it will cost a fortune, this free budget travel guide is for you! You don’t have to break the bank to travel. Below, I’ve put together some budget travel tips to help my wanderers eager to see the world. Here’s a video from one of my summers backpacking Europe and Africa on a budget with friends to help get you inspired!
-
Plan with time!
Flights are usually cheaper the further from date of departure. Book a tour you can pay month to month (like one of my Travel with Nat tours), or plan a trip on your own way in advance and pay travel expenses off little by little. Pace yourself!
-
Travel during low season!
Avoid the crowds and surcharges. Stay away from visiting a country during its peak season when demand is high and accommodation/flight prices are highest!
-
Skip the 5 star!
Choose locations you have friends or family to stay with in order to save on accommodation. You can even stay at a hostel, airbnb, or couch surf instead of at a hotel to cut costs!
-
Pack light!
Avoid baggage fees and roll your clothes or pack in packing cubes. Ask yourself, do I REALLY need to bring this?
-
Work abroad!
Get a job at a hostel, teach English (or your native language), volunteer, or work remotely abroad. Make money while traveling so you can keep exploring!
-
Get more bang for your buck!
Choose a country where the value of your country’s currency (i.e the U.S. dollar) is worth more than that nation’s currency. Find cheap destinations to visit!
-
Cook your meals!
If you stay at an airbnb or hostel, you can purchase groceries at a local market and cook at your accommodation. Eating out every day adds up, and you want to save as much as possible. Set a daily spending budget for yourself and if you’re traveling with friends or family, share meals!
-
Travel on off days!
Finding flights departing on weekdays like Tuesday or Wednesday instead of on weekends when most people are off work and traveling will help in avoiding paying higher prices for airfare! I use Google Flights for the best flight comparisons! Not only does it show major airlines, but also local airlines that fly in the country you’re planning to visit.
-
Travel like a local!
Save money by taking public transportation, using ride shares, or walking the city you’re in. Rent a car and take a road trip! Get a rail pass or take a ferry and take the longer, less traveled path!
